Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
