Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
