Tutoring a Toddler to Grow into an 'British Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Money?

Child education concept
The organization behind the advert claims that what seems like "extravagance or peculiarity" is in fact "purposeful investment in early-stage learning".

"A household based in the northern part of London seeks an exceptional and experienced educator to guide their youngest child on his first steps to becoming an British gentleman."

Looking at this post, you might naturally skip the phrase "initial stages" as simple figurative language.

But, it may be the most significant part of this distinctive employment listing, as it seeks to find a teacher for a infant.

Hundreds of responses have already been received since the anonymous family posted their request for the £180,000 per year tutor, who must be "an exceptional individual".

In recent few weeks, the post has received interest in the media, with several asking why?

Forward-Thinking Method

Adam Caller, head and founder of an education consultancy, which is assisting the family in their hunt, stated that despite early skepticism, he considered the plan "visionary", and "progressive".

When he spoke with the family, he mentioned they recognized the unusual nature of their requirement, and how young their son is.

Nevertheless, they explained that they "preferred not to postpone any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had waited until their older child was five, and by that point "cultural bias had by then set in".

What exactly does the family indicate by "cultural predisposition"?

It's "comprehensive", he answered. "The way you eat, the way you speak".

He said the older sibling had absorbed "extremely delicate, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had adopted their cultural norms. The family explained to Adam they hoped to prevent history to happen again with their new baby.

The plan: To hire a UK tutor, who should speak with standard English accent, to shape the baby from the very start.

Tutoring discussion
The tutoring agency state the listing has sparked a wider discussion about how families regard schooling, elitism and the part of family background in learning.

Osmotic Learning

"A great deal of the learning at the outset here is kind of absorbed naturally," said the CEO.

It's by means of this subtle influence that the family are expecting the child will acquire the English characteristics they wish to impart.

The consultant noted the tutor had to be someone who studied at "the appropriate educational institutions – the same kinds of schools as the family hope to send their son to".

"The educator just has to be the suitable individual, they'll be performing things they aren't even aware they're doing, just naturally," he added.

Expense Not a Factor

The family explained to him the successful candidate should ideally also have understanding of or enthusiasm in riding, alpine skiing, creative fields and musical activities so as to shape the child in a diverse set of passions.

Furthermore though, he said the family wanted the tutor to enrol the child on a selection of classes so the child would be "equestrian training and picking up an instrument by the time they are around three years old".

In the family's minds, helping their son become a "British gentleman" will lead to success and open doors.

"Taking into account the pros and cons of that, because it's certainly a class statement," he adds.

Yet, notwithstanding all this tutelage in "English culture", might the child adopt alleged cultural bias from the international family he is raised by in any case?

"Yes", answered the CEO. "The family realize this could fail, but they've just taken the attitude of, 'why not attempt it and we'll proceed as soon as we can', because the cost of it is not a concern," he stated.

Impractical

A number of in the private teaching field who express those reservations.

Peter Cui, CEO and founder of Blue Education, who provides private tutors, stated that "the journey of adopting dual cultures, or actually, discovering oneself, is something that must be lived into, not manufactured."

The expert noted that he had moved from Asia to the Britain at the time of 7 years old, and had been raised experiencing and embodying two backgrounds. He went on to learn at the University of Cambridge.

The executive was the first individual born in the People's Republic of China to be elected to the position of Finance Head of the Cambridge Union.

"The notion that a single person can function as a representation of UK identity, a person who can somehow transfer the characteristics of a English gentleman onto a one-year-old child, seems to me idealistic and unfeasible," he wrote.

"Based on my background, having a quintessentially UK tutor from infancy will not necessarily create the outcome they want.

"I never had such a figure, and yet I have been lucky enough to experience numerous of the opportunities they aspire for their son."

He continued: "The reality is, self-identity can not be forced from the outside influences; it must be embraced, and it must originate internally."

Purchasing UK Culture

Certainly, UK identity is something Adam thinks can be instructed – and commercialized.

"In my view the fact that the world views us in this light is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
