The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
