Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
