The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
