Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, only for him publicly stated that the management had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Reports that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it has been hard to tell if progress is being made or self-destructing.

Matteo's Surprising Return

At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
